What is Tansformative Community Mediation?
Transformative Philosophy
The transformative model of mediation is the one utilized by CMS-D. This process emphasizes that:
- Mediation can foster empowerment and recognition of the participants.
- Mediators are facilitative (as opposed to evaluative), help participants understand each other's perspectives, assist parties with defining issues more clearly, and identify the definition of what each party wants in order to create a mutual understanding.
- Transformative mediators understand that exploration of feelings, emotions, and interests are important to reach a sustainable agreement.
- Mediators can help participants to identify opportunities for relationship-building and personal growth that are presented in conflict.
- A successful mediation can restore dignity and help build collaborative relationships.
