How do I become an RJI volunteer?
Becoming a volunteer with the Restorative Justice Program is a unique opportunity for individuals to become involved in the community through providing conflict resolution. As a volunteer mediator, you will learn about restorative practices that deal with accountability, responsibility and restoration of relationships that are designed to empower parties to resolve their own conflict. Trainings are held twice a year, and individuals are invited to apply at any time throughout the year, as the interview process and police reference check (vulnerable sector) can take several months.
The Process
- Individuals indicate their interest in being considered a volunteer mediator by contacting the Volunteer Coordinator at bkotras@cmsd.org or by phoning 416-740-2522 ext.40. You will receive an introductory package of materials.
- After the training, selected applicants will be invited to join the RJ volunteer roster, and others may be invited to be on a waiting list. Applications will be kept on file for 6 months.
- Volunteer mediators will be offered further training and development opportunities through mentoring, Role Play/Information Nights, advanced trainings, and internships.
Other program volunteer opportunities

If you are interested in proceeding, you must complete the application form and return it to the Volunteer Coordinator with a resume and cover letter indicating your interest in being considered a volunteer. Some applicants will be invited for an interview, and some of those will be invited to participate in the Victim Offender Dialogue Training.
